The DBM700: Duplo’s latest booklet maker

The Duplo DBM700 is the newest and now the flagship of its digital booklet maker range. When the first machines hit the market, simple booklets were indeed what they were capable of. Then came models with digital readers to identify the pages required for specific consumers and so were able to produce entirely bespoke publications, investment reports being typical. 

Now the DBM700 introduces a square spine binding as an optional feature for what used to be a machine with a limited set of production parameters. However, as digital printing has improved and has spread into different sectors, booklet making has had to keep pace. Duplo says: “One of the standout features of the DBM700 is its remarkable adaptability, effortlessly handling wide range of printing jobs including the capability to create square spine booklets.”

The sheets are moved on flat belts rather than round belts improving the accuracy of delivery and allowing the minimum grammage to drop to 52gsm from 64gsm on the DBM600 which has been replaced. Landscape feeding remains. 

Pressure on the folding rollers has been increased to help with a sharper fold and square spine production on the 700S version. The diameter of the stitching wire has been increased to cope with the increased range of paginations.

This means books with up to 240pp (60 sheets), faster throughput and the square spine feature. It will deliver 4,600 A5 booklets with up to ten sheets, 5,200 105x200mm booklets an hour with five sheets. In two-up mode the equivalent of 9,000 booklets and hour will be produced with a maximum of 171x254mm. These will have two stitches in each booklet thanks to a four Hohner stitching head unit.

The booklet maker can be configured to run from a standard DSC10 collating towards, from a digital sheet feeder or in the Duetto version from both for applications that combine digital and offset sheets. Job settings are stored where they can be recalled and used to trigger a 60 second machine set up. There is no limit to the number of jobs that can be stored.

This is still a booklet maker so falls beneath the specification of the iSaddle 5.0 which is Duplo’s flagship stitching product with an ability to handle different format and substrate sheets into the same finished product, something that could only be contemplated by the most sophisticated of machines previously.
