The new version of the Pro VC70000 is intended to increase the appeal of the flagship web press with features that automate further processes and increase the scope of machine to take work from litho.
Ricoh has introduced a new version of its flagship continuous feed inkjet press. The Ricoh Pro VC70000 now has a version dubbed the Pro VC70000E which includes what the developer calls “significant upgrades to hardware, software and workflow”. These address issues that have been raised as barriers to adoption of inkjet printing in the commercial print space.
This includes software and hardware options to improve automation and consistency, both to suit operators with less experience and to cope with a wider range of papers. This is pertinent, says Ricoh, because shortages of preferred paper types can result in late changes to substrates with an impact on set up times and costs.
Users of the VC70000, while able to print on coated offset papers, have had a limited selection that were qualified to meet quality expectations, let alone could offer accurate calculations on ink coverage.
The application of a primer, what Ricoh is calling an “undercoat” ahead of the print units, results in a consistent surface for the ink and consistent quality as a consequence. This delivers sharper details and more vibrant colours according to the press manufacturer. The inks are the same as used on the standard VC70000, helping consistency across machines.
The onboard scanner measures ink density, jet outs, registration and colour with automatic closed loop adjustments made through Ricoh’s Automation Suite which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to improve the process. Automatic printhead cleaning is part of the process.
This helps reduce the need for experienced operators, an issue that more and more printers are starting to suffer from. The data collected about the print run can be provided to customers as well as proof of quality. It can also be used for internal analysis and to feedback into the workflow and MIS to improve the accuracy of the estimating process.
The machine continues to use Ricoh’s Gen5 piezo printheads with a 1200x1200dpi resolution.
Vice president of graphic communications at Ricoh Europe Eef de Ridder, says: “The Pro VC70000E will help clients automate their production as well as overcome challenges they are experiencing resulting from paper supply shortages. This opens doors to new business opportunities by delivering high end luxury applications with next level print quality.”
The press has been put through its paces in Germany at Sattler Media Group with the scanner and automated operation options. Innovation and solutions manager Christian Haneke says: “The solution enables us to document print standards at any point in the production run for ourselves or our clients and to maintain optimal quality. It also helps to minimise setup times and improve the overall availability of the Ricoh Pro VC70000.”
