Scodix wants to make its mark in display

The company that introduced digital embellishment sees display and corrugated packaging as a logical next step.

Scodix is building on continuing growth in the corrugated packaging sector with a version of its technology for corrugated boards and rigid materials.

It is a natural progression from digital embellishments focused on digital printing to folding carton and now display print.

The new machine is the Ultra 7000SHD. It retains the format of the Ultra 6000SHD and the ability to add multiple styles of embellishment while the sheet remains inside the machine, achieving precise register without multiple passes under its inkjet heads.

The Scodix Ultra 7000SHD receives its official launch at Fespa within the Corrugated sub show where it has a 150m2 stand.

The company has around 500 installations of its B2 and B1 models for paper and carton boards. The former is used in commercial print and the latter for cartons. “Over the last two years packaging has been the focus with the B1 model,” says VP sales for EMEA and global channels Moti Vaknin. That has led to initial installations with the major packaging groups.

These are also the target for the new model he adds. “DS Smith sites are already producing embellished jobs,” he says. Scodix is targeting luxury packaging using corrugated boards for strength and lightness as well as display applications.

Scodix CEO and co founder Eli Grinberg adds: “The Scodix Ultra 7000SHD represents a definitive milestone in our mission to digitize embellishment for every segment of the print industry.

“We are creating a new category by bringing our SHD embellishment technology to rigid substrates, and we are empowering printers to enter high margin markets that were previously unreachable.”

The new model brings digital embellishment including spot varnish, tactile effects and foiling, will be possible on corrugated boards, regardless of whether the top liner is kraft or a coated substrate. The new model will also work with rigid materials including acrylics, Dibond and Foamex sheets.

The company claims that by producing point of sale boards and display for high value products, spirits and drinks, cosmetics and perfumes being obvious opportunities. Vaknin outlines the impact that spot varnish, foiling and raised effects can have on the  otherwise flat finish of a retail display unit. Digital embellishment also eliminates the need for dies and screen printing which have been necessary for this type of work, and where because of there has been very little enhancement to date.

Scodix will introduce a 3D visualisation application at the same time as the new printer. This will enable users to demonstrate to their customers the impact that enhancement can make, thus helping to make digital enhancement real.
