Scodix has turned to UK company Compact Foilers to provide the module which will add a new layer of versatility to the digital embossing, spot varnishing and variable data that its machines already provide.
Scodix has been looking for a way to add digital foiling, examining technology from a range of possible providers, electing to work with Compact Foilers in Taunton. The resulting unit is designed to fit new and existing Scodix machines, fitting after the inkjet applied varnish and ahead of the delivery.
The first outing for the collaboration will be at the GraphExpo show in Chicago next month. The first chance to see it in Europe will be at Drupa while samples will be available at the Print Show in Birmingham in October where Compact Foilers has a stand.
Eli Grinberg, chief technical officer and founder of Scodix, says: “This agreement promises to expand our capabilities dramatically, offering our customers an additional range of effects on all types of substrates.
“We have worked closely with the Compact Foilers team to integrate its technology into our process and the results are outstanding. Our collaboration has already produced an inline digitised foiling solution that is unmatched in both production speeds and quality. This agreement aims to have many positive ramifications for both companies.”
Tim Self, director of Compact Foilers, says that other ideas are in discussion. In the meantime, the company’s Taunton factory is filling up with the foiling modules that are designed to fit in with the look and operation of the Scodix range. After six months in the Israeli company’s R&D facilities, units have been field tested and others have been sold.
The attraction of the Compact Foilers’ technology is built on registration accuracy and the economic management of the foil that can be applied to the resin that the Scodix applies. This enables the system to deliver the intricate effects that are associated with hot foiling and expensive dies.
There are currently more than 200 Scodix units in operation around the world. However, the company has been slow to develop the US market, which has led to Mark Nixon managing director of Conversion UK which handles Scodix in this country, taking charge of the US business.
Compact Foilers offers units for cold foiling in line on a conventional litho press. Almost all installations to date have been outside the UK.
Scodix has added digital foiling to the range of capabilities it can deliver thanks to link up with UK company Compact Foilers. There are 200 Scodix units worldwide that can be retro fitted with the new module.
