RDM adds strength to recycled packaging boards

Italian based board producer has introduced a high content recycled board with no compromise on strength.

Leading cartonboard supplier RDM has introduced a new grade of white lined chipboard with a high recycled percentage.

Vincicoat Plus will have a minimum of 85% recovered fibre yet retaining the strength of virgin fibre boards. This is compared to standard recycled grades which are reckoned to be 15-20% weaker than virgin fibre equivalents.

The board is suitable for food packaging, cleaning, personal care and home appliance packaging.

The new grade is “the strongest GD board RDM Group has ever offered” the company says. This applied to top and side load strength and will enable better performance in creasing and folding. The company says these characteristics will enable brands and converters to choose a board that is up to 20% lighter or one that performs as a much stronger board at the same grammar levels.

The board has undergone extensive laboratory testing and has been proven to work efficiently on printing presses, die cutting and box forming machinery.

Much of the know-how behind Vincicoat Plus was developed at the Fiskeby Mill in Sweden which has built an enviable reputation for recycled boards. That experience has been applied to the new product which is being produced at the Santa Giustina mill in Italy.

The group reckons the qualities of the new material will make it a success. Chief sustainability and innovation officer Krzysztof Krajewski states: “When performance is no longer the trade off, recycled cartonboard becomes the obvious choice.

“With Vincicoat Plus, brand owners can achieve the strength, durability, and reliability they need in their packaging to protect precious products, while also reducing material use and maximise recycled fibre content. Stronger boxes, lighter packs, and a circular solution all come together, giving brands the confidence to deliver exceptional solutions to consumers while supporting global environmental goals.”

Last year RDM announced plans to develop a recycled board with a PVOH water soluble laminate film suitable for food and aroma sensitive applications, offering protection against any contamination by oils used in processing machinery. This means that the packaging will be fully recyclable. Ecopol is RDM’s partner in the project, providing the film technology to produce the barrier board.
