Premier doubles up with second RMGT installation in a year

East London printer Premier Print has installed a RMGT 925, its second SRA1 press in 12 months from the Japanese manufacturer.

Premier Print has installed its second RMGT 920 series press in a year with a five-colour machine arriving at its factory in Beckton, East London.

The company installed its first machine – a four-colour LED UV press – in November last year to replace a B2 Heidelberg Speedmaster. Now it has become an all SRA1 RMGT house with installation of a five-colour version running conventional inks. The fifth unit will be running a seal after four-colour process.

The first RMGT has more than met expectations, with zero down time due to machine failure. “That has never happened before,” says director Gary Goodson, who with brother Darren, owns the business.

“We have been blown away by our first RMGT press. The A1 format has allowed us to print eight A4 pages to view, meaning that we could print twice as much work that we could on our B2 format machines. We have produced over 20 million impressions in our first year on the RMGT 924 LED UV – that would have meant we would have had to produce 40 million B2 impressions on our previous presses, which would have been very unlikely.”

The company specialises in short run magazines and brochures, averaging 2,000 copies each, and having doubled up on most finishing equipment already, has no need for further investment in that area. The company runs round pile B1 folders, three Muller Martini stitching lines and Horizon Stitchliner Mk3 and Horizon BQ470 PUR for perfect binding. “This year we installed a Polar 115 guillotine and second Foliant laminator from IFS so we can run gloss film on one and matt on the other,” says Darren Goodson.

“Printers need to move to SRA1 in order to compete these days. It is simply not possible to be competitive with B2. We have swapped from B2 to SRA1 on the same footprint with the same personnel and a substantial saving on plate costs,” he says.

Makeready, even on the larger sheet, come in at five minutes on average and Goodson reckons that litho is competitive from 250 sheets upwards. Any jobs below that are printed on Konica Minolta digital presses. And with the StitchLiner, the company does not have to fold before stitching, though some guillotine work may be needed. “We reckon that 70-80% of work goes through the StitchLiner,” he says.

The company also runs two B1 platesetters giving it almost complete resilience and back up. “We are almost in that position now. It’s necessary when running 24/7. The LED UV press is printing the uncoated papers and work and turn because the sheet is fully dry, which is a big help in finishing.

“I think we have the right combination of digital, conventional and UV litho.”

Brother Gary adds: “Not only can we now run eight pages to view rather than four, but the simultaneous fully automatic plate changing capability cuts makeready times by more than half. We now have an additional 30% increase in capacity with the arrival of the 925, and that’s on top of the 30% increase in turnover achieved in 2019.”
