DS Smith will use the seven-colour EFI Nozomi C18000 Plus inkjet press it ordered at the recent ICE exhibition in Munich for creating corrugated displays as well as ecommerce and retail packaging.
The press has been delivered to the DS Smith plant at Ely, home to the DS Smith UK Retail Marketing operation. Its managing director Sarah Bell says: “EFI Nozomi technology has played an important role in helping more CPG and FMCG brands stand out with timely, efficient and effective premium packaging.
“Now that the printer is coming to our Ely corrugated display production facility, our customers will gain much more versatility, with the ability to quickly and affordably produce high end, customised displays featuring targeted promotions or designs.”
As well as CMYK, the press offers orange, violet and white inks. This will enable DS Smith to match 97% of the Pantone colour universe says EFI. Vice president packaging and building materials Evandro Matteucci says: “This technology creates a new level of sustainability and capability for the corrugated space, and it will make DS Smith Retail Marketing even more responsive to brands looking to reduce the time needed to launch new display campaigns.”
As well as conventional free standing display units, the operation produces dump bins, on shelf display units, lifesize displays and Toblerone displays,
The plant is not new to inkjet printing. It has installed the first Inca S40i configured for printing on corrugated. That was in 2014.
Since then DS Smith has invested in single-pass inkjet with a C18000 Plus installed at its plant in Lisbon in 2021. This is providing “near-offset quality in ecommerce packaging, shelf ready packaging and other applications” at significantly reduced delivery times. DS Smith has HP PageWide T400S and T1100S presses at its Featherstone site in Yorkshire. A second T1100S serves the DACH region.
DS Smith’s investment in what is the 50th Nozomi, continues a strong run for EFI. It sold its first UK Nozomi for corrugated boxes to Caps Cases and followed that last year with a Nozomi for Cepac.
