Theatre programme printer John Good, Rugby, has become a carbon balanced printer just months after completing its largest ever investment.
That had led to the installation of a new Speedmaster XL106-5 with LED UV drying and a Horizon BQ500 PUR perfect binder. It has also fitted a solar panel array to reduce dependence on external energy.
Both new machines, installed in September last year, are more efficient than production capacity replaced and have helped reduce carbon generated, the purpose of the carbon balanced printer programme. The press can run at 21,000sph and cuts environmental soiling by 45% the company says, along with other features to cut waste and increase efficiency per sheet.
The BQ500 is the company’s first perfect binder, generating an immediate environmental benefit as work no longer needs to be shuffled between printer and trade finisher. Both has settled in quickly with the company commenting about the binder that even though it had been prepared “we were still amazed by the short set up times”.
The carbon balanced printer programme is endorsed by the World Land Trust which uses carbon payments to secure and preserve carbon soaking forests that are at risk in sensitive parts of the world.
The step up follows on from its use of carbon balanced paper where the merchant makes the payments according to the carbon generated by manufacture, conversion and delivery of the paper to the printer.

The printer has worked with CarbonCo to measure how its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are in order to create a target to reduce emissions and a figure which the World Land Trust will offset. John Good specialises in print for arts associations including theatres, museums, orchestras and other performing arts organisations. It supplies both posters and programmes, with design, direct mail, merchandise, banners and fulfilment.
