Headley Brothers has completed the installation of a four-unit Goss M600 16pp heatset web press at its factory in Ashford, Kent. The press will run alongside a Sunday 2000 24pp web and replaces two Heidelberg 16s.
“It brings more flexibility for the short and medium run magazine market,” says managing director Roger Pitt. The press was sourced through Goss in Austria and includes Autoplate, ink and folder presetting, closed loop colour and Ecocool dryer with integrated chill rollers.
The new machine joins a magazine printer where recent investments have included Heidelberg B1 perfecting sheetfed and a Kodak Nexpress with the dimensional ink unit and Muller Martini Bolero binder. The company runs three ten-unit Speedmaster 102s with CutStar and an eight-unit model. The presses being replaced are a four-unit web and five-unit 16pp webs
It is a “considerable and timely investment” according to Pitt and is in line with a strategy of continuous investment “to ensure that we can continually provide our customers with the most efficient services”.
It comes too as others in the magazineare investing, Warner Brothers in a B1 KBA perfector and the smaller Pensord in a Speedmaster 106. And it comes as consolidation at the top end of the magazine print sector may encourage publishers to look to alternative suppliers. As the new press is designed for high lift colour printing, as well as faster turnaround than the older webs could offer, it meets current market demands, says Pitt.
“Print runs and paginations have reduced over recent years, while increased competition from online media means that printed pieces need to be more beautifully-produced and eye-catching than ever,” he explains. “This press is about us investing in the most flexible solution for handling fluctuating requirements and tight turn-around times, always with consistently high quality.” The company prints 350 regular magazines at the Ashford plant, including Print Business, and remains an independent family owned business.
