Four create dates for Fedrigoni

The paper maker’s Fedrigoni 365 project showcasing up and coming  designers has involved four printers and one finishing company to create a best of the best product.

Four of the country’s leading printers have combined with Diamond Print Services to deliver the 2022 version of the Fedrigoni 365 calendar for 2022. Three used offset presses while one printer, Screaming Colour, used its Indigo. This was for the final of the four volumes that make up the Fedrigoni 365 book. Screaming Colour also printed the slip case for the collection.

A different style of binding was used for each of the four volumes; exposed Sussex binding, Swiss bound, Otabind and glued casebound. All were printed on Fedrigoni’s Materica papers, 250gsm for covers (except for the casebound volume 3) and 120gsm for the body sections. Each also used a different PMS colour and different shades of the paper.

Thus Hampton Printing printed the first volume on Metrica Acqua, Team Impression on Materica Terra Gialla, Kingsbury Press on Materica Quarz and Screaming Colour on Terra Rossa for the cover and Gesso for the body sections.

This is a complete contrast to the 2021 calendar which was printed on Ricoh’s C7200 press with a fifth colour to produce completely unique editions with different combinations of artwork for each date and colours.

“This year, we wanted to facilitate the collaboration between print businesses for the good of the industry which, over the past two years, has been impacted by Covid-19. We also wanted to use the Fedrigoni 365 project to shine a light on the finishing techniques, as showcased by our partner Diamond, and the different binding techniques that contribute to the overall creative effect,” says Ambra Fridegotto  It is these small but significant differences that make this year’s Fedrigoni 365 project a true celebration of the creative ecosystem in its entirety.”

Every page was designed by a different designer or business, getting a credit on that page making the publication a showcase of emerging design talent.

It is also a first participation of Hampton Printing, says managing director Mike Malpas. It printed the job on an XL106 which was installed last year. The job called for PMS 8404 as a spot colour. And Malpas says he was delighted to be asked to participate.

“We use Fedrigoni materials all the time. They have some great substrates that are top quality. And it’s nice to support design companies and young people. It has been a pleasure to try to help.”

Hampton Printing has achieved Platinum level under the EcoVadis certification scheme for sustainability. “We are chuffed to be in the top 1% of businesses,” says Malpas. “We have worked hard for it. We are very aware of sustainability as a business.”

Team Impression ran the job on its Komori Lithrone G40 with a Pantone 8400 as the special colour and Kingsbury Press ran the job on its Speedmaster CX102 using PMS 874.
