Agfa is working with Hybrid Software to expand its portfolio of applications in the labels and packaging sector, deepening an existing arrangement with Global Graphics that has so far been focused on Rip technology.
Under the terms of the new long term, OEM software developmen deal, Agfa gains access to the full Hybrid product portfolio of packaging workflow tools. Global Graphics has this year announced a new style of DFE for automation in the sector, though this is not part of this deal. And while Agfa is supplying litho plates and software for security and identification in packaging, its Apogee workflow has not been as developed in packaging as it is in commercial printing.
Andy Grant, global head of software at Agfa, says that the deal extends the existing relationship between the two groups. “We see this alliance as a logical next step, and as a way to build upon our existing technologies to develop innovative and customer oriented solutions for our current as well as future market segments,” he adds.
There is scope for future expansion into the rapidly growing digital space for packaging and label production. The Smart DFE is intended to be a fully automated manufacturing solution combining Industry 4.0 tools and MIS integration to drive inkjet presses in packaging and labels applications.
Agfa’s latest Tauro large format inkjet presses have the capability and automation to produce corrugated boards. It does not currently offer an inkjet label press, though was a pioneer of UV inkjet for packaging with the Dotrix press.
Guido Van der Schueren, chairman of Global Graphics, adds: “We are eager to broaden and intensify our collaboration with Agfa. It will enable us to strengthen and grow the Hybrid Software solutions portfolio and to help optimise the next release of Agfa’s software products.”
