HP Indigo house Century Studios in Nottingham has bought a CCM Premier 92 guillotine, larger than is necessary to finish work from the SRA3 digital presses.
The new cutter will expand capacity and will streamline throughput for customers that range from high street names to designers and individuals looking for stand out wedding stationery. The machine was chosen after the company carried out a review to determine the most efficient and cost effective means of production.
“We could see that by finishing bigger sheets we would be able to manage more work and that in turn would help us expand capacity while still meeting tight turnaround times. When we looked at the numbers a bigger guillotine made absolute sense,” says director Wayne Salvin.
It has meant a step of two sizes from the previous guillotine that the company had. As well as the larger cutting edge, the larger guillotine offers the refinements a more professional machine can deliver. This includes a larger backguage spindle for faster adjustment of the back gauge, longer intervals between servicing and larger side table for ease of handling stacks.
Add in the deeper clamp opening and the potential gains in productivity are clear. This will lead to a fast payback time, says Salvin. “It will pay for itself in the next few months,” he says.
The company offers a range of services aimed at the short run design led market, ranging from Singer sewing, perfect binding, embossing and foiling. It is also handling an increasing amount of duplex and triplex laminated boards for business cards, invitations and the like. This has an impact on the guillotining stage, drastically reducing the numbers that can be held in a stack if the clamp height is limited.
Century Studios operates two Indigos, having purchased the first ePrint 1000 in 1999. It has an equally long term relationship with Terry Cooper Services, also in Nottingham. “We know and trust Terry Cooper Services,” says Salvin. “We liked the ability of the Premier 92 to handle the larger sheet size, the ease of set up and programmability.”
