Peterborough digital printer and poetry publisher Bonacia is taking delivery of its third Kodak Nexpress next month and has plans for its fourth in the new year. The press is scheduled to arrive on December 6.
Production manager Carl Whitelock and two operators have spent the last week in Kiel training on the SX3300, the long sheet version of the colour digital press ahead of the arrival of the machine. It will join two older Nexpress machines while the press to arrive next year will replace one of the older generation presses says a spokesman for the business. “It’s a better quality and faster machine than those we have already,” says marketing manager Lynsey Evans, who says that the company moved from litho to digital printing “many years ago”.
The company produces print for schools, poetry titles and an increasing volume of self published books, running several web sites to attract custom. As well as the book printing, the company runs as a commercial printer, producing anything from business cards to marketing material on the Nexpresses. These also print the covers for the books Bonacia publishes. This continues to be a growing business. Volumes have topped 12 million printed pages in the six months from March to the end of August this year.
Text sections are produced on Océ presses while the Nexpresses produce both the covers, any colour sections and commercial work for customers in the local area. Consequently there will be no need to increase binding capacity, which is based on Horizon BQ470 perfect binding, nor to increase other finishing capacity. Whitelock says the decision to buy the Nexpress was not difficult. “The print quality is excellent and with faster printing times, it’s perfect for our printing needs,” he says.
