Antalis McNaughton celebrates with top designers inside the big top

The Antalis McNaughton Review has been refreshed and expanded with the awards presentation taking place in a circus tent on an English summer’s evening.

STUDIO BROCHURE #3, PRINTED BY GEOFF NEAL LITHO has won the overall prize in the Antalis McNaughton Review for 2011. It was created by London’s Studio EMMI to demonstrate its own skills in corporate identity and print design. It had won the brochures- product category.

The Review has been running continuously for more than 20 years, initially as the McNaughton Review. It took on a new format this year, intended to open up the competition, and particularly the award ceremony, to more guests. The presentation was staged inside a circus tent in the grounds and hall of Warwick Castle involving short listed designers as well as the winners. Antalis UK managing director David Hunter told guests that there had been 400 entries across 13 categories.

“THERE WERE THREE NEW AWARDS THIS YEAR: BEST IN digital print, Student Designer of the Year and People’s Choice,” he said. The latter was won by RNIB Annual Review after entries to the section were shown online and visitors asked to select their favourite. They did so in their hundreds.

Students were challenged to design a calendar to a commercial brief issued by Antalis McNaughton to create its own 2013 calendar. The winner was produced by University Campus Suffolk and called Metamorphosis. The design used examples of paper in the illustrations to carry the idea “that paper can be anything”.

THE PREVAILING REQUIREMENT WAS THAT SUBMISSIONS had to make use of papers from Antalis McNaughton, some using several stocks in the one piece. Typical was Light Heart Dark Mind from Studio Output which won the new digital print category and which used Rives Tradition Bright White and Metallic Ice Silver from the Curious Collection of papers.

Other winners were: Reports for Keeping the Spotlight on Older People, designed by M-Four for Manchester City Council; Brochures – corporate to Powell Allen for the prospectus for KCL School of Medicine; Direct Mail to Tayburn, designer of the Lynne Forsyth Mailer; Stationery to MARK for Rainy City Stories Stationery, produced for the Manchester Literary Festival; Magazines for Monocle Alpino, designed by Monocle Magazine and Catalogues which went to Made Thought for the Design Miami/ 2011 catalogue.

AS WELL AS GEOFF NEAL LITHO, OTHER PRINTERS involved in the winning work included Stones, Banbury; Push, London; Plan 4 Print, Ilkeston; Stabur Graphics, Wimbledon; Team Impression, Leeds; and Identity, Tunbridge Wells.

The judging team was headed by Kim Wilson, head of print and production from McCann Erikson and included Jane Pluer, Pentagram; Chris Smith, Traffic and Jan Honeywell, Black Sun.
