Treetop scores UK first with Heidelberg Versafire EP

Having sold multiple Versafire EP presses this year, Heidelberg is now starting to roll with the more productive Versafire EP.

Crawley company Treetop Design & Print is up and running with the first Heidelberg Versafire EP in the UK.

This is the digital press that shares the same print engine as the Ricoh Pro C9200 and it represents a big step up in productivity for Treetop. The company had previously operated a Linoprint C751, “the need for shorter runs has increased and this investment provides flexibility,” says Will Lovegrove, who has taken over at the business, started 34 years ago by his father Graham.

Heidelberg has been part of the company’s story since the start through generations of litho press to the current Speedmaster B2. Now the business is changing again. “Some of runs that we were printing on the litho press could have gone digital, now the Versafire provides a true alternative,” Lovegrove says.

“We gain flexibility for our customers. If we can save them money by printing on the digital press and it can give them a good enough job to represent their brand, we tell them. They are open to these suggestions now,” he says.

The new press has capacity to print a six-page product and to print to stock at 470gsm the company intends to exploit. “Up until now we have not pushed digital but, moving forward, we will. The press has already handled work for a rock group, one of our existing customers. It will also allow us to expand our POS business and to handle short run and sample packaging as well as general commercial work.” Continuous monitoring of colour for consistency, litho sideway sheet positioning and accuracy for finishing have been part of the appeal. The company, says Lovegrove, tested three other print options, resulting in the decision to stick with Heidelberg based on its service and support track record.

The next year will have finishing technology on the agenda he adds. “The business needs to be more ‘digital’, so finishing is something the business will look at early in the new year, if all goes well,” he says.

Will Lovegrove is moving the company in a digital direction with investment in a Heidelberg Versafire EP, the first that has been installed in the UK. The company will be able to choose whether digital or litho is best suited to each customer's jobs.
