Zenith order will double up on hybrid press capacity with new Heidelberg Speedmaster

South Wales commercial and carton printer can move either way with a second Speedmaster XL106 hybrid press due for installation in January.

Zenith Print Group has returned to Heidelberg for a second hybrid B1 press, a year after ordering a first machine for its south Wales plant.

Like the first UV/conventional press, the Speedmaster XL106-5+LX3 five-colour plus coater press, the new machine comes in a push to stop configuration. The installation will give the company two presses capable of printing cartonboard to the highest quality alongside an eight-colour perfecting XL106-8P.

The press is also equipped with Autoplate Pro, Inpress Control 2 and Prinect control with the ability to store job settings in the cloud. This allows the company to direct repeat jobs to either of the five colour presses confident that output quality will match over time and regardless of what machine is used. This includes settings for feeder and air through the machine as well as colour settings.

The first press has been used extensively in UV mode to cope with the growth in both general and specialist packaging for coin collectors, where the ability to hit colours on the edges of the litho gamut is required. The Heidelberg Navigator is used to match this kind of complex work and to minimise makeready. It will accept colour information in number out formats, from PMS, Heidelberg’s HKS, Lab coordinates and cxd files.

The use of Heidelberg consumables is part of the drive to minimise variables in the process. “All our consumables are supplied by Heidelberg because we trust them to have tested them for different applications and it means we have one port of call if anything does go wrong and we need advice. We rely on their knowledge and first rate support,” says Zenith chairman John Mooney.

The press is also kitted out to handle acrylic and other plastics. A dual wash system keeps wash for UV and conventional ink separate, likewise for the coating system.

The company has also committed to taking three Polar 115N guillotines, two for the Pontypool plant and for the its Pontypridd factory. Further investment will depend on the evolution of work that the new press enables. Installations is scheduled for January.
