The UK’s first Scodix Ultra 101 is on course for delivery this week to Precision Printing in Dagenham. It will replace two first generation S74 Scodix machines and will introduce digital foiling along with the full range of spot varnish effects.
“Foil blocking is very popular in the social stationery space,” says Gary Peeling. “This is one of the drivers for the investment in the Scodix Ultra 101. We have clients looking for digital foil enhancement.” The new machine is up to four times faster than the earlier Scodx machines that the company operates.
“We had one Scodix originally and acquired another through the take over of CMYKHub last year. Both are in excess of more than four years old. We wanted something with four times the speed and the ability to add foil because we have not been able to add foil digitally.”
The option of applying a Scodix effect over a foil laminate is effective “but it is not actual foil”, says Peeling. The company has the ability to apply foil conventionally which is used for some on demand customers.”
Precision’s business is divided between legacy clients about large corporates, work for online retailers and work for resellers through its own Wherethetradebuys brand. All will benefit from the digital foil effects.
The sale is the first since Friedheim International took on the Scodix agency for the UK last year. John Harrison, product specialist, says: “There has been a definite upturn in interest in digital embellishment in the last month, mainly from the commercial print industry and online print businesses, and also from the folding carton industry. And there is plenty of potential in greetings cards.”
The Scodix Ultra 101 is B2 format machine offering different varnish effects using the Acidic polymer applied via inkjet heads. Foil is applied to an adhesive printed by the inkjet heads. Variable data is possible. It will print on both litho and B2 sheets from the HP Indigo. Precision has two.
One of the key applications will be for business cards offered through Wherethetradebuys. “One of the most popular products is a 450gsm laminated card with UV varnish,” says Peeling. “This will reduce the cost of that application so that it can be affordable for longer runs, while we will now be able to add foil enhancement to designs in the business card range.
“We are confident it will be very popular, as well as covering enhancement for books and brochures.”
Precision has developed a means of showing the shimmer effect via a web portal so that users will be able to see what they are buying. It is planned to have this in operation by the middle of next month.
“Scodix enhancement has been successful across all our business units. The Ultra 101 industrialises the process and provides exciting opportunities for printers and clients.”
