New chairman as Mercian Labels prepares for growth

Martin Dallas has vast experience in packaging and labels that will help Mercian in the next stage of its development.

Martin Dallas has become chairman of Mercian Labels as the company embarks on a growth strategy that has been mapped out for the next three to five years.

He succeeds Dennis Marrison in the role. Marrison has been a member of the Mercian board since 2008 and is retiring. His replacement is a former of CEO of Advanced Coated Products and has extensive packaging and label industry experience with Amcor, Cadbury Schweppes, Payne and latterly Essentra before joining ACP.

Adrian Steele, managing director of Mercian Labels, says: “We are very excited by Martin's appointment. With a huge range of experience in the packaging industry, he is ideally suited to take Mercian to the next phase of its development as a world class manufacturer and supplier of labels and packaging solutions.”

He joins as the company switches from a focus on achieving internal efficiencies, concentrating operations at its Burntwood factory earlier this year. Mercian Labels has also installed what sales director Hugo Gell calls “a very comprehensive ERP system”.

“We are now using it to great effect to improve productivity and quality. We are now looking to capitalise on the gains we have made in terms of consistency and quality. We have an aggressive growth plan for the next few years.”

The company operates from the purpose built 2,800m2 site where it runs both flexo machines and Xeikon digital presses and employs 50 staff.

While Gell gives no details, expansion from labels into flexible packaging is possible as is a target on larger global brands, where the experience of the new chairman will be hugely relevant to the business.

The appointment comes as the company prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year with events planned to mark the landmark throughout 2019 and to raise the company’s profile. Says Steele: “Mercian's strategic growth plan will be much enhanced with the knowledge and expertise that Martin has to offer.”
