Kent carton printer opts for Koenig & Bauer for finishing

Offset Print & Packaging has complemented Koenig & Bauer presses with an Iberia die cutter and Duran folder gluer from the same stable.

Offset Print & Packaging has placed its latest investment with Koenig & Bauer, adding equipment to its finishing area rather than its press room in Aylesford, Kent.

The company is buying a Koenig & Bauer Iberica iPress 144 K cutting and creasing platen and has added an Omega Allpro 145 folder gluer from Koenig & Bauer Duran to the order. “This was not on our initial plans but after seeing a machine at the Koenig & Bauer open house, we deduced to invest and upgrade our gluing department with this additional piece of kit,” says Vince Breary, OPP’s managing director of operations.

The folder gluer is the first from Duran to be sold in this country since the German press provider bought the Turkish company towards the end of 2018. The sale was handled by Duran's UK distributor Friedheim International.

The company had been at the open house to look over cutting and creasing platens and to confirm interest in the Koenig & Bauer Iberica machine. This will suit OPP’s Rapida 142 large format sheetfed press. It will be delivered in March, adding to the existing line up.

The order comes after a thorough examination of suitable machines, says Breary. “We have been looking into cut and crease investments for the past 18 months in line with our strategy growth plans and were undecided on format and manufacturer. Having looked at alternatives and deciding on format size we were impressed with build quality and operator friendly equipment on offer from Koenig & Bauer Iberica.”

The ipress 144 K includes stripping and blanking to leave stacks of finished cartons ready for the folder glueing lines. Waste is removed from the platen to complete the process without risk of contamination. The machine includes optical registration from printed marks to ensure precise die to sheet registration.

It will cut through corrugated to 4mm thick through carton boards to paper with 600 tonnes of pressure at a rate of 7,500 sheets an hour. Koenig & Bauer has adapted the platen so that OPP’s existing library of dies can be used.

The new folder gluer will run up to 300m/minute on cartonboard material from 200-600gsm and on a range of corrugated boards. It is configured for high speed set up with servo powered tools for accurate positioning ahead of the folding section.

Once completed, Offset Print & Packaging will be a showcase for Koenig & Bauer technology with both B1 and VLF presses and carton finishing equipment. “We expect this to be the first of many similar installations in the UK,” says Koenig & Bauer UK director sales Chris Scully.
